Description

Size: 33×48,5cm
The canvas by Raffaello Sanzio, now kept at the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden, was painted for the Benedictines of the Church of San Sisto in Piacenza by the will of Julius II, a tribute to Pope Sista IV, a member of the Della Rovere family like him. In fact, the canvas also features St. Sixtus (like Sixtus II) and St. Barbara.
Towards the middle of the eighteenth century the monks ceded to the Insigne of Augustus III, great elector of Saxony, who was collecting one of the most important collections of Renaissance art and who paid 25 thousand Roman scudi. The Sistine Madonna was therefore already very famous at the time, thanks to the great Giorgio Vasari.
In the cold winter of 1745 she completed her journey through the Alps to finally reach Dresden and be admired by the greatest philosophers and poets of the time: Goethe (whose final image of Faust refers to this Madonna), Hegel, Puskin, Schopenhauer , Grossmann.
